XTREME Nightclub Visual Residency

A foundational residency

Before MELT EVERYTHING became a visual studio, founder Morgan Lavery held a three-night-a-week residency at XTREME inside Grand Sierra Resort in Reno. The room was built around a live band, a DJ and an enormous field of screens. Behind the band, a 12 × 8-foot projection surface became the visual anchor. Four televisions climbed vertically on either side, while screens continued throughout the venue.

Before the resident VJ was familiar

This was an early chapter in live nightclub visuals, when the role itself was still new. At the time, there were perhaps five visual artists in North America with comparable nightclub residencies. XTREME offered a rare opportunity to develop the craft night after night.

A live laboratory

The repetition created a live feedback loop. Three nights every week meant an idea could be tested, the crowd’s response observed and the programming adjusted the next night. The residency developed an instinct for when to build anticipation, when to hold back, when a cut should land with the band and when the DJ needed the screens to become the dominant source of energy.

Go-go dancers, live musicians, lighting, sound, bartenders and the crowd were all part of the same system. The visual program could not exist in isolation. It needed to support the people in the room, stay responsive to the music and help shape the arc of the night.

Programming the room

XTREME established a principle that still guides MELT’s live work: nightclub programming is an exercise in attention. It requires reading multiple time scales at once—the beat happening now, the phrase about to resolve, the energy of the next ten minutes and the larger rhythm of an entire night.

With so many displays, composition also became spatial. A look had to read on the mega-screen, carry across the stacked side monitors and still make sense on televisions seen from the bar or the back of the room. That experience became a foundation for the multi-screen concerts, festival stages and immersive environments MELT would later create.

Foundational impact

The XTREME residency was a defining chapter in the development of MELT EVERYTHING. It gave the company’s founder the hours, pressure and immediate audience feedback needed to develop a durable approach to live programming. More than any single image, the project was about discovering how visuals can direct attention, connect performers and turn a venue into one coherent experience.

The screen system

Contemporary coverage counted 25 42-inch plasma displays; Grand Sierra Resort’s own venue page later promoted 40 high-definition screens. Both sources identify the 12 × 8-foot projection surface. The stage photographs preserve the signature layout: the mega-screen framed by four stacked televisions on each side.

Clip controller / effects

Numark NuVJ

A DJ-style hardware interface for the NuVJ and ArKaos software. It put clip triggering, effects, jog wheels and a crossfader under Morgan’s hands instead of behind a mouse.

Live input

Composite camera

An analog camera brought the room itself into the mix. Performers, go-go dancers and the crowd could become live visual material alongside the prepared clips. The exact camera model is not preserved in the archive.

Video mixer / switcher

EDIROL V-4

The hands-on center of the signal path. Its input selection, onboard effects and physical T-bar made it possible to combine prepared playback with the camera feed and shape the final output in real time.
